It is exactly this that has caused me to adore and respect the Libertines to such an extent. Bank balances were never the primary concern, music and lyrics were written to embrace Barat and Doherty’s own passions and to generously share with their fellow Libertarians. At a time when intelligence, edge and meaning in British music had slipped into a gentle coma, and the youth of the 1990’s were either spoon-fed mindless acoustic fumblers like Starsailor and Travis, or resorted to American nu-metal trash such as Limp Bizkit and Papa Roach; The Libertines provided music fans with a refreshing reason to be patriotic again. Their debut single with Rough Trade, the double A-side, ‘What a Waster/I Get Along’ encapsulated the bands fervent philosophy down to a tee and became the climax of band-to-fan interaction at every gig with the embodying lyric, ‘People tell me I’m wrong (pause) fuck ‘em’.
I don't 'alf love them Libertines, just so you know xx
